See the cheapest rate you can cancel for free on every night at Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and IHG, each rate's terms, and alerts that skip non-refundable rates.

The lowest price on a hotel’s booking page is often a rate you can’t cancel. HotelXray shows you the other price too. Set the calendar’s Cash Rate row to Free Cancellation, and every night of the month shows the cheapest rate you can still cancel for free, on Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and IHG.

In the month above, every night costs $20 more once you ask for a rate you can cancel. On December 14, ringed, the cheapest rate is $329, but the cheapest one you can cancel is $349. That’s the price of flexibility, and the calendar shows it for every date before you pick one.

Refundable vs non-refundable hotel rates

A refundable rate holds the room and lets you cancel without charge until the hotel’s deadline. A non-refundable rate is usually paid when you book, and you get nothing back if your plans change. The chains sell these under names such as Advance Purchase (Hyatt and Hilton), Prepay and Save (Marriott) and Book Early and Save (IHG).

The cheapest rate is often the non-refundable one because the hotel is selling certainty: it gets paid whatever happens, so it can afford a discount. IHG’s guide to flexible and prepaid rates puts the usual free window for flexible rates at 24 to 48 hours before arrival.

No chain has one policy for every hotel. Hyatt and Hilton both say cancellation terms vary by hotel and by rate, so two rates for the same room on the same night can follow different rules. Deadlines also run on the hotel’s local time, as Marriott notes, which matters when you cancel from another time zone.

See the cheapest refundable rate for every night

With Free Cancellation on, every night’s cash price is the cheapest rate you can cancel for free, and the cents per point (CPP) is worked out against it, so an award is valued against a booking you could actually cancel. A night with no cancellable rate shows ✕ for cash. Search results follow the same choice, so you can compare a week of hotels on cancellable rates too.

Pick a night to see the difference room by room. Here is Monday, December 14, under each choice:

All The 2 Queen Beds room for Monday December 14 under All: cash $329, Non-refundable, from the Member Advance Purchase rate, beside 20,000 points at 1.6 cents per point
Free Cancellation The same room under Free Cancellation: cash $349 from the Member Rate, Cancel up to 1 day before, beside the same 20,000 points at 1.7 cents per point
The same award, against a $329 prepaid rate and a $349 rate you can cancel until the day before.

Know each rate’s cancellation terms before you book

Every rate in a night’s room list carries one short line with its terms, written the same way on all four chains: “Non-refundable”, “Cancel up to 1 day before”, “Cancel until 6:00 pm on arrival day”. You no longer have to open each rate’s details on the hotel’s site to find out.

Switch Per Room to All Cash Rates to see every rate a room is sold at, cheapest first. It’s the quickest way to see what flexibility costs at a given hotel on a given night.

Tuesday December 15 with Per Room on All Cash Rates: the 2 Queen Beds room lists Member Advance Purchase at $341 and Advance Purchase at $349, both Non-refundable, then Member Rate at $361, Standard Rate at $369, Bed and Breakfast at $404, PARK AND STAY at $438 and REGENCY CLUB at $444, each Cancel up to 1 day before
Two prepaid rates, then five you can cancel up to the day before, from $361.

When you book close to arrival, read the line against your dates. A rate that cancels up to 7 days before can’t be cancelled for free once you’re inside those 7 days.

Get an alert for a refundable rate

When the price you want isn’t there yet, an award & rate alert can wait for it. Set Cancellation terms to Free Cancellation on a cash alert, and only a rate you can cancel will set it off. A cheap non-refundable rate never does.

The alert form's Notify me about section with Cash selected, a Max nightly rate of 375 USD including fees and before taxes, and Cancellation terms set to Free Cancellation
A cash alert for a cancellable rate at $375 a night or less.

Each chain has a walkthrough from setup to booking: Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton and IHG.

When is the non-refundable rate worth it?

The gap between the two prices is what you pay to keep the right to walk away. In the example above that’s $20 a night, or $60 for a three-night stay, to be able to cancel until the day before.

The refundable rate usually earns its premium when:

  • Your dates or plans could still change.
  • The price might drop before you arrive. You can cancel and rebook at the lower rate, and reservation monitoring watches your booking and emails you when it gets cheaper.
  • You’re holding a cash room while you wait for award space. Book the refundable rate, set a points alert, and switch when the award opens.

The non-refundable rate makes sense when your dates are fixed, the gap is large, and you already know the price is good. Before you book one, check the Free Cancellation price for your nights so you know exactly what you’re giving up.

The rate filter works with your company’s corporate rates and with your guest count, and the HotelXray overview covers everything else in the side panel.
